Things You Must Know About Water Damage

Water damages can happen day or night, for a variety of different reasons. Every water damage is different and not ever water damage is remediated the same way. Most important thing we as homeowners need to know is all water damage issues are covered by under your standard homeowner’s insurance policy.

Water remediation can be costly especially if it is not covered by your insurance company. It is imperative that you understand your policies coverages. Here are a few things that homeowners need to know about water damage and your insurance policy:

  • Water damage and flood damage are NOT covered by the same insurance policies- Homeowner’s policies only cover water damages NOT damage caused by rising water. If you live in a flood-prone areas and/or a flood zone having flood insurance is imperative. People who do not carry flood coverage are rolling the dice with one of there greatest assets, there home.
  • Your policy may not cover all types of water damage – There are many kinds of water damage, and some are not covered by your policy. Check your insurance policy for exclusions so that you know what kinds of water damage is and is not covered. Usually, insurance policies cover water damage brought about by emergencies, such as a burst pipe of an appliance leak. If the damage is caused by overflowing gutters that direct water into your home because you neglected to clean them, the repair cost must come out of your pocket. This would be considered a repair and maintenance issue. Most homeowner’s policy will not pay for repairs on things that should have been maintained. Also worth noting is that there is a statute of limitations in making a water damage claim under terms of your policy.
  • Calling your insurance company as soon as water damage happens is a must – To be reimbursed for your water-damage issues, calling your insurance company immediately after your incident occurs is essential. The longer you let a water damage sit and the longer you delay calling your insurance company, the greater the chance that you will not get as much financial help as you need. Most policies read that you as the homeowner are responsible to prevent secondary damages to your home in the event of a loss.
